How to lose weight naturally by Victorian mum-of-two who used simple tweaks to drop seven dress sizes and 55 kilos

A size 24 mum who used to exercise at the gym late at night because she was too ashamed of her weight has dropped seven dress sizes after she shed 55 kilos naturally.

Victoria Bowen, from Victoria, tipped the scales at 120 kilos after she lived off an unhealthy diet of a block-of-chocolate-a-day, takeaway and large portions of homecooked meals.

But the 30-year-old knew she needed to overcome her bad eating habits to get healthy after she struggled to lift herself back up from the ground during a picnic at a park.

Determined to become her healthiest self, the mum – who’s now a fitness coach – slimmed down to a size 10 without following strict diets or unrealistic workouts.

Before her incredible body transformation, Victoria says her typical day on a plate consisted of a block of chocolate and large portions of food.

“I was living off takeaway – the quickest options available at the time. If it was a home cooked meal, I was eating a massive serving size bigger than my husband’s,” she tells 7Life.

Her turning point

Nearly five years ago, Victoria was enjoying a picnic with her family when she struggled to get back on her feet.

“I remember the turning point for me, the point that made me say ‘enough is enough, I have to do something about my weight’,” she recalls.

“I was at the park with my husband and two kids, then aged 18 months and a newborn. My husband was playing with my oldest and I was sitting on the picnic rug with my youngest.

“I tried to get up off the ground and I couldn’t. My legs couldn’t lift me up from the ground, I had to call my husband over to help me up. That was the point I knew that I had to start and my journey started the very next day.”

Realistic workouts with kids in tow

And so she started her weight loss journey by walking every single day while pushing her two kids in a pram.

“I just walked for as long as I could each day sometimes that was only 10 to 15 minutes before I was back home. Every day I just aimed for longer,” she says.

“Once my fitness levels started to build up and I was able to walk for 30 minutes, I started to time myself to see if I could walk the same distance quicker, or a further distance in the same time.

“I’m a very competitive person with myself so I love a challenge.”

Shortly after, Victoria found the courage to sign up to a gym.

“I would go at 11pm at night out of shame of wanting no one to see me, I was embarrassed at how big I had let myself get,” she says.

“I knew within myself that I was big however I didn’t realise I was THAT big.”

Eventually, she found the perfect personal trainer before she joined fitness classes.

“I was seeing the personal trainer two times per week and attending two to three classes and loving it,” she says.

“This is when I really started to see the changes in my body. I then decided to really see how far I could push myself. I really love a challenge so I entered a bikini competition. I enjoyed every minute of prep and comp day.”

Body transformation

Over the space of three years, Victoria lost an astonishing 55 kilos – and she has since maintained her weight.

“My journey wasn’t easy but for the life I now live, I’d go though all those ups and downs again if I had to,” she says.

“I can now enjoy all the physical activities with my kids – there was no way I would have been able to in the past. I was alive but I wasn’t living.”

She now credits ‘flexible dieting’ for her size 10 physique where she eats a balanced diet of macronutrients – protein, carbohydrates and fat – and anything she wants, within reason.

“I count my macros each day, this gives me total food flexibility meaning I can still reach my goals but include all those foods that I really love, like chocolate,” she says.

“I make sure I include my favourite foods into my diet each day – that’s the benefit of flexible dieting. I can include everything I love so I don’t feel deprived.”

Her typical day on a plate now includes:

Breakfast: Overnight oats topped with strawberries, peanut butter and sugar-free maple syrup

Lunch: Chicken and salad, or a wrap with some kind of protein and salad

Snack: Fruits, popcorn or avocado on Salada crackers

Dinner: Protein of choice, salad and air fryer chips, homemade burgers, pita wraps/pockets

Dessert: Chocolate

Simple daily tweaks

She suggests doing simple everyday things like parking further away from your destination or taking the stairs instead of the lift.

“Move your body in whatever way you enjoy,” she says.

“If you enjoy the gym start with one to two sessions a week and increase as these sessions become another part of your day.”

To keep yourself full for longer between meals, Victoria suggests these simple food swaps.

“Bulk up your meals with salads and vegetables and switch your dressings or sauces to low fat and low sugar options,” she says.

“Increase your water intake, reduce soft drink intake or switch to a sugar free alternative, choose air fried over deep fried and make homemade versions of your favourite takeaway meals.”

For those looking to lose weight, Victoria – who documents her incredible weight loss via Instagram – says: “Sounds so simple but just start.

“Start to make small simple daily changes over time – these will add up to bigger changes,” she explains.

“Don’t try to overhaul your whole life in one night, Make small changes that you can maintain over time so that this just becomes a part of your daily life. This will result in long-term sustainable habits and maintainable weight loss.”
