fitness: Fitness Is The Key | Bengaluru News
Bengaluru: Domestic heavyweights Karnataka are heavy-duty travellers on the circuit as well, lugging fitness equipment which sometimes weighs in the excess of 500 kg.
With cricket being played in bio-secure environments and quarantine the norm owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, emphasis on fitness has been pronounced this season.
Roping in renowned strength and conditioning coach AT Rajamani Prabhu was one big step taken in the right direction.
A former state-level cricketer, Rajamani has introduced many changes in the way Karnataka players train.
To begin with, the KSCA gymnasium was revamped with a dedicated facility for competitive cricketers.
“When I was appointed as the strength and conditioning coach, the KSCA management stressed that all players had to train here. Earlier, depending on facilities and requirements, players trained at various centres. One of the things I suggested to the KSCA to bring the players together was upgrading the facility. We needed a 1,500sq ft area and within a week it was ready. Now, everyone trains under one roof,” Rajamani said.
Karnataka State Cricket Association secretary Santosh Menon outlined the thought process behind the upgrade: “At KSCA we have always been committed to giving our players the best facilities and so we invested in a state-of-art gymnasium for the exclusive use of competitive cricketers. Rajamani has brought about a lot of changes in the way our players train and we have ensured all the requirements listed by him have been met.”
Speaking about the new fitness management routine, Rajamani stated: “Since we are in bio-bubbles during tournaments, the KSCA has provided us with an exclusive team room at hotels which we convert into our fitness centre. We carry most of the essential equipment with us and hire heavier equipment locally.”
One of the challenges the support staff have faced was the recovery of players from Covid-19. “The pandemic came with its own challenges. When a player tests negative, the physios take stock of the situation and assess the fitness and fatigue levels. Then we start with light weight sessions and gradually build on it,” added Rajamani.
