At Collina Strada, Y2K Beauty Evolves for 2022

This season, Collina Strada showcased its fall 2022 collection with a digital presentation, inviting the fashion set to experience its version of The Hills, entitled The Collinas (which actually translates to “the hills” in Italian).

In the spoof, actor Tommy Dorfman makes her fashion week debut playing a twenty-something moving to New York City for a fashion internship at Collina Strada alongside other stars like Chloe Wise and Aaron Rose Philip. While she’s rather clueless on how to actually do her job properly, she’s lovable with great taste—an aspect her peers can’t get enough of. “I love her look though,” gossips one of the characters. “I’m obsessed,” says another.

Throughout the episode, designer Hillary Taymour’s whimsical, colorful pieces were accompanied by a “lived-in kind of club look” makeup that nodded to the early-mid 2000s. “We want it to look like smudgy and smokey like you’ve been dancing all night and are throwing on mascara in the bathroom, with a little pop of color in the corner,” explained makeup artist Allie Smith on set days before the show’s official premier.

While the skin was kept fresh with a semi-matte glow, powered by Tula’s daily sunscreen and rose glow eye balm beneath an application of MAC’s Studio Fix Tech Cream-to-Powder Foundation, the eyes were the stars of the makeup look. Smith applied MAC Haute & Naughty Lash Mascara haphazardly to lashes, adding pops of green, pink, and shimmery color to the eyes with a paint pot from MAC. Lips were painted to be “juicy, full, and frosty” with a coat of gloss atop Tula’s tinted treatment balm. “What I love about working with Hillary is that we want all of our amazing talent to feel like themselves, but in the Collina world,” said Smith. Every model wore a slightly different makeup look.

The hair continued the early aughts theme, but with a 2022 refresh. “We wanted to bring back the crimped, textured look; messy but it works,” said hairstylist Mideyah Parker. “Some models got a messy middle part while others had side swept bangs. We then sprayed a dark or light streak into the hair to give it more of an exotic feel.” Parker oversaturated tresses with an Aveda pomade for a grunge effect, paired with the brand’s Texture Tonic for added texture and shine.

“It’s really fun and fresh—kind of like 2005 reinterpreted,” said Smith, confirming that our obsession with early-aughts nostalgia definitely isn’t going anywhere.
